The Man Who Lived the Life of Mang Serapio

It's funny how we need artistic interpretations of life for us to enjoy it and see it as a big matter and for us to realize that life is not a trash that we can just throw anywhere. Life is full of life and we should not waste every single day we are living it. I hope someday, some people will realize that there is more to life than what facebook is. The realization came in the pretext when I was staging Ang Paglilitis ni Mang Serapio.

Ang Paglilitis ni Mang Sera (The Trial of Old Marco) is one of my memorable performance in theater. This performance had given me the opportunity to had my first step in the Tanghalang Yaman Lahi.

I was very hesitant to join the theater when I first heard the call for audition of Ang Paglilitis ni Mang Serapio. I have this fear I might get embarrassed in front of many people. But I realized that I have to face this for me to overcome it. I decided to try the audition. When my name was called, I was a little bit shaky and frightened, but as I am throwing up each line, I became comfortable and much much comfortable. A series of acting tests was done but after that, I was accepted and I'll be playing the role of Mang Serapio. This was my first major role in Manila and became the come back after a long time I haven't performed on stage.

It was a mix of emotions when I was to stage Mang Serapio. Excited ako na kabado na takot. It was really a challenge for me kasi akala ko madali magportray ng baliw pero hindi pala. Lalo na kung kailangan mo huwag ipakitang baliw ka pero sa huli dapat maipakita mong baliw ka.

Ang Paglilitis ni Mang Serapio

Ang Paglilitis ni Mang Serapio is a one act play that was written by Paul Dumol in year 1969. First staged at the Ateneo High School in 1969 then at the Raha Sulayman Theater in Intramuros, Manila by the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) in 1970. This was used by the CCP in its First National Drama Competition in 1989. This play has been staged many times and each performance has different interpretations and dramatizations. But, one thing that remain on it is its context that Ang Paglilitis ni Mang Serapio is a tragedy.

It is a story of an old man, Mang Serapio who were penalized after having a child. Naniniwala kasi ang fedaracion na dagdag lang sa gastusin iyon at bawas sakanilang kita sa panlilimos. But if you will look deeper in to it, the play is really not about Mang Serapio. IT IS ABOUT US! The situation that we our going through. The situation of our country. It is a political play by which the character were just used as symbolism for us to think about REALITY!

Kung naawa ka kay Mang Serapio, ito rin ang panahon para isipin mo ang tao sa paligid mo. Nakakawa din sila di ba? Dahil si Mang Serapio at ang tao sa paligid mo ay iisa.

Encore!

Portraying an deranged character is very hard. I tried it once back in college (Humanities class. I don't know if I convinced my audience. Besides the make-up and the costume the act will make it all happen.

Nice work there! Galing mo talaga Noks!

wow, i miss theater..and astig, a Paul Dumol piece! i believe ibang level ang theater actors. Bow ako sa inyo. its not just about 'playing' the part. you have to do it in a way that will convince your audience that you are your character. i hope i can go back and watch theater again. invite mo kami sa next acting gig mo ha?
