I know Van Gogh for a long time. He is the artist of the famous "The Starry Night". A Dutch painter. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder... But at that moment, I was with a different kind of Van Gogh, a Filipino Van Gogh. He is Jetro Rafael and he is bipolar too. He is the owner of this unique and creative restaurant called "Van Gogh is Bipolar" which is located at Inner Courtyard of 154 Maginhawa Street, Sikatuna Village, Quezon City. He brought the concept of Van Gogh is Bipolar to the Manila FAME at SMX Convention Center at MOA, Pasay City last March 2013 to showcase his artistry and celebrate a visual feast with the people.
Featured on 2013 Manila FAME's Creative Hotspots is Van Gogh is Bipolar, a unique restaurant that serves meals that activate happy-calming hormones. This restaurant was owned by an artist and chef, Jetro Rafael who is a self-confessed Bipolar. He conceptualized this cafe to fill our stomachs with his mood-altering foods and treat our souls with his art pieces confining while you dine. Agaw pansin, that almost everyone who pass turns their heads to these dumps of shoes and boots, chairs and scattered droplets of paints. "What is going on?" I need to find out what's going on. There is something that magnetize me to this lavish booth. It was a gallery at that point and I didn't know I was on an art show. I know Van Gogh for a long time. You can touch on each piece of artwork. You can step on the paintings. I eagerly explored the artworks and tried to connect with them and I felt millions of expressions. There is a lot going on. Maybe the artist is hyper-manic when he created the artworks. :) This is the kind of show that I want. It keeps my mind on thinking, speculating and makes me wonder a lot. And then I met the Van Gogh, Jetro Rafael. The creator. And I am glad to see him smiling. :)
