Feast Of The Black Nazarene 2012

1/12/2012

Last Monday, I just witnessed and even participated one of the biggest celebrated event in our country. It is the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila which is being celebrated every January 9 of the year. The Black Nazarene is believed to be a miraculous image of Jesus Christ sculpted in black wood. The feast is being participated by millions of devotees on barefoot.

Since it was my first time to witness the procession, I didn't know what to expect. Me and my friend just headed to the place where people are gathering and waiting. We walked from Philippine Normal University straight to the Manila City Hall. And there where we started to join the celebration and the adventure. :)

The procession started around 8 o'clock in the morning and finished by 6 o'clock in the morning the following day. With almost 8 millions devotees and 22 hours procession, it is said to be the largest and longest celebration in the history of the Feast of the  Black Nazarene. Although we were not able to finish the procession, I am still happy that I took some pictures of the event and the people who participated it.

Read here to know  what happened at the Feast of the Black Nazarene.

Never attended the feast day but sometimes I have been to Quiapo Church during Friday which is Quiapo day or black Nazarene day. Daming tao palagi.

Such a great crowd for a festival. It portrays how the Filipino raise the flag of Christianity.

Sometimes I don't understand the fanaticism of the people who attend this annual procession. The Black Nazarene is the same Jesus Christ we know.

The intensity of the feast was wholly captured in your snapshots! To tell you the truth, I never had the balls to attend because large crowd make me cringe. The devotees just have so much heart!

I love your pictures. Captured the very essence of the festival. Suggestion for the title: Barefoot.

Barefoot? That must hurt. But I believe this is a very interesting event. Now if all of us can smile like that amputee!

Like most of the comments above..
I've never joined this kind of procession, I feel that this type of practice is an unplaced fanaticism. But I don't judge these people, its their faith that drives them.
Your pictures are crisp!
I was actually tempted to attend and take snapshots but thought the better out of it.
Define refined street photography.. I just have to look your pictures! :)

This was my first feast of Black Nazarene experience. I remember shooting at the roof of Padre Burgos underpass . The experience was shocking and overwhelming. Grabe mga deboto.

I enjoyed looking at your photos than watching the news!!! So depressing when they reported it on tv. With your photos I can feel the essence of their sacrifice and devotion... Thanks for sharing this!

What you've captured are real people, people whom the Lord is seeking to be in His fold. What they have in their hearts are inexplicable feelings of their love for the Only Begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ, who is sinless but yet offered His life for them to be redeemed from their sins.

He had set an example for them to follow. But yet they have no choice but to do it in a tradition which their lives are at stake for any eventually of chaos, riot, terrorism that may occur beyond their expectation.

These real people are ready for it. They are to die whatever matters may happen for they believe that Jesus is with them. They love die for Christ's name sake.

In our sane mind, we call them religious fanatics, but they have their own privilege to be called as such as long as their passion for Christ is satisfied.

God bless them for they know what they're doing!

I soooo love your shots. May I ask what camera you're using?

Well, for me everyday is a Miracle and our salvation lies within us. I respect this people who sacrificed their time and sometimes their lives just to be able to be with the Black Nazarene. But I guess, even in the smallest corner of your home, if you intently and genuinely ask for God's miracle, He will hear you.

Galing naman ng pics mo. Super crisp ng images. I haven't witnessed the parade yet, parang grabeng sacrifice ano? almost 24 hours kang mag-aantay na dadaan ang Nazareno.
