The yearly Flower Festival in Baguio City locally known as Panagbenga 2013 divulged a colorful procession of the gigantic floats made of flowers. This was another blow to our tourism industry as thousand of visitors go to Baguio City to witness this vibrant celebration. Panagbenga is a Kankanaey word that means "blossoming of flowers," because during the month of February, the flowers from Benguet are in their season of Blooming. Many of the cultural practices in Baguio City are often portrayed in the Panagbenga celebration especially during the street dancing and float parades.
This 2013, the theme of Panagbenga Festival is “A Blooming Odyssey”. The celebration will highlight not only of the season of blooming of flowers, but will also feature the blooming of the city's economy.
As the highlight of the festival, everyone was eager to see the colorful grand float parade which started from Panagbenga Park down to Athletic Bowl. The parade was accompanied by the dancers and the marching bands. Dancers clad in flower-inspired costumes, streets were festooned by fresh flowers and foliage, making the whole city in a festive atmosphere. They say that the visitors were doubled this year than the Panagbenga Festival 2012, the reason why the sides of the streets were jam-packed of people waiting for the arrival of the floats. Through the years, the Panagbenga Festival became a major help in boosting the tourism of Baguio City and has also continued to promote the richness of it's indigenous heritage.
Panagbenga is one particular event that practices the artistry of the people of Baguio City. The month-long celebration resonates the history, traditions and values of the City of Baguio and the entire Cordilleras.
