Subtext: What is the Proper Way of Saying I LOVE YOU?

“Syempre makulit ako. Mahal kita e. Interesado akong malaman kung anong nangyayari sa ‘yo. Nag-aalala ako. At isa pa, di mo naman kelangan sagutin lahat ng messages ko. Pero siguro naman dapat mong sagutin kung yung pinadala ko nagtatapos sa QUESTION MARK!! Di ba!?!”

Subtext is really one of my favorite theater plays. I've been with two different productions. From a month long running of the show in University of the Philippines Los Banos in year 2006 to a 2-day presentation in Emilio Aguinaldo College - Manila's in 2010, I can say "wala talaga tong kakupas-kupas."

Subtext is a Palanca Award-winning written by Niel de Mesa. This talks a bout the different ways of saying or I should say expressing LOVE. From the old generation's writing letter to the younger ones' text messaging, it doesn't matter as long as you say it right. This is what Subtext is all about. A cheesy, funny and sweet way saying I Love You. You won't stop laughing and I know you can relate with the each line of the play.

In UPLB, what we did is what we call,"intimate theater." You get an intimate look at the play with just a few audiences surrounding it. It was directed by Anthony Cabatic under the Thespian circle Production.

Now, after 4 years, Subtext was again given life in EAC - Manila by the Yaman Lahi Theater Guild in EAC - Manila.

Scene 1. Who can forget about "LAB? LAB? Helllooooo.. L-A-B?! Hindi L-U-V-. Hindi L-O-V-E. Ang pagkakaspell mo... L-A-B!! "I LAB U"."
And everybody laughed. This is about a lady and a guy who quarreled on a fine dining restaurant because of misunderstandings on their text messages. But aside from quarreling, everything was funny.

Scene 2. This about two young lovers who were exchanging text messages and want to confess their affections to each other. Until it didn't happen for the aide said they don't have enough phone credits to send text messages. This scene is full of laughter and "kilig" moments. Surely, young audiences can relate to this.

Scene 3. This scene is about two old husband and wife. The woman is suspecting the guy to have another woman through the letter the man wrote. Until the man finally get the letter and recite it to his wife who is pretending to be sleeping. The wife finally knew that it was for her. After knowing, she had asthma attack and died. This was a combination of comedy and drama but it will really touch your heart.

Curtain call. I am glad it was a full-house. Many students from different schools watched the play too.

I was surprised when I was visited by my friends Eyah, Lucky and Joem. They also met the casts of the play. Thanks!

I just have to share this funny pic of mine. This was taken after the play. :)

Theater play is very challenging as far as I know. In my senior college days, I took part in one-act play playwright by the late Prof. Nolasco. It was my first time to do it. It's good I've never missed my line from the script. I know as I see the pictures in one of the acting scenes poste3d here, "SUBTEXT" indeed is funny, cheesy, sweety love story in a play. Wonderful. Keep up the good work!

I love this post Noks. Just sad that people, especially the young ones, are not into theater art anymore. They're more into 3D movies now. I miss watching theater shows. Hope I could watch one of these when I get home. Thanks for sharing.

I love plays! We used to act during summer vacation in our town. They conduct a summer workshop where students get to learn how to act, improve their speech and show their dancing prowess then at the end of summer present all the things we've learned on stage.

I miss watching theatrical plays. When I was in HS, we always watch plays at UPLB and my favorite was Romeo Rocks Juliet.
